I was walking around my neighborhood the other day and I suddenly became aware of what I was doing… what I had been doing most of my life.
I had been so caught up in my own thoughts… memories of past events as well as distant projections of the future… that I didn’t stop to notice all the beauty that was around me.
I didn’t cherish the moment.
It wasn’t until a beautiful butterfly flew right across my face that I realized what I had been missing out on.
You see… most of us walk through life in a “walking daze”. We are so absorbed in our intricate thoughts, our worries, our expectations that we fail to live in the present.
The chirping of the birds, the dancing of the butterflies, the swaying of the trees in the wind… Our minds do such an excellent job to block them out… so we can concentrate on our thoughts.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing… focus… but sometimes, just sometimes, perhaps we can suspend those voices in our heads for just a little while… so we can appreciate all these wonderful things around us… like the butterflies’ dance.
For they are nature’s gifts to us.
